Genetic Counselor
Duties and Responsibilities:
A genetic counselor is defined as the understanding and adaption to the medical and psychological implications of genetic contributions to disease. Genetic Counselors work with
patients who have genetic or inherited, disorders or birth defects. They also
work with people who are at risk for these issues. Genetic counselors often:

Educate their patients about their conditions
and the best way to cure them or help them.

Examine family history to see the cause of their
genetic problem.
·
Help patients come up with solutions to about
genetic disorders that won’t affect their religious or ethical beliefs.
·
Conduct research about genetic disorders so they’re
well informed.
·
Educate medical professionals and the public
about these genetic disorders.
Average Salary: $25,000-$55,000
Educational Requirements:
Students interested in becoming a
Genetic Counselor should take challenging classes in high school that emphasize
math and science.
A Master’s Degree is required and
most graduate programs require a strong undergraduate background in biology, chemistry,
and behavioral science. Many states require genetic counselors to be certified.
I might like to become a genetic counselor. It seems
interesting because you learn of new disorders and get to help people who are
confused about what they have.
